This calculator doesn't estimate how many boxes or rolls of tape you need — it takes quantities you already have, whether from the Packing Supplies Calculator, a store receipt, or your own plan, and turns them into a total cost using prices you enter yourself. No retailer's pricing is built in, so the total only ever reflects what you tell it.
Every category works the same way: line total = quantity × the price you entered for that category. Miscellaneous supplies is the one exception — since it's a single catch-all line, it's just the one total you type in.
Total Packing Supplies Cost = the sum of all nine category totals.
Cost Per Box = Total Packing Supplies Cost ÷ total box count (small + medium + large + wardrobe boxes). It only appears once you've entered at least one box, and it spreads your entire supply total — not just what you spent on boxes — across your box count as a rough per-box benchmark.
Say you counted up 20 small boxes, 15 medium, 10 large, and 3 wardrobe boxes, plus 8 rolls of tape, 3 packs of packing paper, 2 rolls of bubble wrap, and 2 packs of labels — and you priced each at the illustrative numbers below, with $25 in miscellaneous extras. These are made-up numbers for the example only, not any store's real pricing.
With 48 total boxes (20 + 15 + 10 + 3), Cost Per Box = $282.00 ÷ 48 = $5.88.
Packing supply prices vary enormously by where you shop. A big-box hardware store, a dedicated moving-supply retailer, a truck rental counter, and a free source like a grocery store or an online marketplace can all charge completely different amounts for what's functionally the same box — including $0 for supplies you got for free, which this calculator handles just as well as a full-price receipt. This tool has no connection to any retailer's current or historical pricing; it performs only the arithmetic on the numbers you type in, nothing more. Sales tax, delivery fees, and membership or bulk discounts also aren't added automatically. If any of those apply to your purchase, fold them into the unit price you enter for that category so your total reflects what you'll actually pay, not just the sticker price.
No. Every price in this calculator is one you type in yourself — nothing is pre-filled or looked up from any retailer. Packing supply prices vary too much by store, region, and whether a box is new or reused for a single built-in number to be accurate for your move, so you're always working from your own numbers.
If you don't already know how many boxes or rolls of tape you'll need, use the Packing Supplies Calculator to estimate quantities from your home size and belongings first. You can also pull quantities straight from a store receipt, a moving company's supply list, or your own count.
This calculator doesn't add sales tax or delivery fees on its own. If you want them reflected in your total, fold them into the unit price you enter for that category — for example, if a $10 box works out to $10.80 after tax, enter $10.80.
It divides your entire total — boxes plus tape, paper, bubble wrap, and everything else — by your total box count. That makes it a rough per-box benchmark for comparing moves or quotes, not the literal price of a single box.
